Getting To Know You

The Bubble Guppies’ Molly has long pink hair, a blue tail, and loves to sing! Deema has yellow curly hair, an orange tail, and loves telling jokes! Goby has blue hair, a blue and purple tail, and loves telling stories.

Just like the Bubble Guppies, everyone we meet is different in some ways and similar in others!

Getting to know new people helps young children understand that there are many different kinds of people in the world — and that each person deserves to be treated with respect and kindness.

Research shows that meeting people from different backgrounds early in life has a direct link with how children view others later in life.

Go ahead and introduce yourself to someone new!

Parent/Caregiver Tip: When you travel or visit a new neighborhood, spend some time at the playground to give your child the opportunity to meet new people and make new friends.

Instructions

  • Let’s go outside and walk around our neighborhood!
  • While we walk, let’s look around at the people around us.
  • Let’s wave and say, “Hi!”’ to the people we meet! It’s okay if your child doesn’t want to interact or feels shy. They will benefit from observing and watching you greet your neighbors.

Instructions

  • Let’s go outside and walk around our neighborhood!
  • While we walk, let’s look around at the other people we see. Let’s smile, wave, and say “Hello” to our neighbors.
  • Let’s introduce ourselves to someone who you don’t know yet. It could be someone who works at a local store, a neighbor, or someone else we meet on our walk.
  • If you want to learn more about the person we meet, you can ask a question and share something about yourself. For example, you could ask, “What’s your puppy’s name? I have a stuffed puppy named Lucky.”

Vocabulary

  • Meet: to come together
  • Greet: to say hello
  • Neighbor: a person living nearby

  • Let’s go out and find someone in our neighborhood to interview.
  • While we walk, let’s look around at the people we see. Let’s smile, wave, and say “Hello” to our neighbors.
  • Together, let’s introduce ourselves to someone we don’t know and see if they have time to answer a few questions.
  • Let’s listen to their answers and respond. What do we have in common? What things about us seem different?

Vocabulary

  • Meet: to come together
  • Greet: to say hello
  • Neighbor: a person living nearby
Here are some "starter questions" to get a conversation started with a neighbor!

Does your child need a little help starting a conversation with someone new?

You can share this list of questions with your child.

They can ask their favorites, or make up their own that are inspired by this list!

Consider: Which questions are best conversation helpers?
